Meditation is a Practice
Meditation is a practice, in most cases, the individual sits in silence for a period of time. I’m sure you get visions of a cross-legged person, one with a straight spine, forward-facing with closed eyes. Just as there are many asana poses, there are numerous techniques for practicing meditation. Some people like guided meditation, while others prefer music or binaural beats. I’ve been practicing for about 35 years. I started with guided meditations. They helped me quiet my mind.
Meditation as a Beginner
I wasn’t always able to sit in silence for extended periods of time. When I first started meditation in 1981, my body wanted to MOVE! I was ready to expand my mind. I was hanging around with some real cutting-edge people in Memphis, Tennessee. We called ourselves the “New Age”. I was channeling music. I was inspired to write environmentally conscientious music before environmental awareness became popular. Needless to say, I had limited success, with only one claim to real fame. That was a double platinum video of the Sugar Ray vs Hagler Boxing match, for which I wrote the lyrics to the theme song…. so long ago. see the music video here
In the beginning, I tried sitting cross-legged, laying in bed, and sitting up in bed. I tried meditating before yoga and after my yoga asanas. Over time I learned that sitting up on crossed legs or sitting in a comfortable chair serves me best.
Time to Meditate
Another challenge I had was establishing a regular practice. I tried to practice daily. At first, that was hard. It proved too much of a challenge at first. I was young and impatient. Meditation went by the wayside for a month or two. Then I would pick it back up again when I remembered how good my attitude was during days that started with meditation. Over time and through the years, my practice has become more regulated, more consistent, longer, and equally more beneficial. I now meditate between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on how much time I have in the morning. But, Yoga asana, meditation and prayer are my daily routine now.
There are so many options! It can be overwhelming when you first start. I feel like I’ve tried it all, as I reached for the ever-elusive “samadhi” or enlightenment. One of the best tools I have found is the Insight Timer App., which I’ve used for more than six years and more than 4000 hours of meditation practice.
By practicing yoga and meditation regularly, you can cultivate peace and well-being within yourself, while also contributing to the collective well-being of humanity.
